Grade 2- Blog #21- November 25- 29th Yuto demonstrates how the force of air can suspend a Styrofoam ball in the air! LOOKING BACK Happy Science Week! We really rolled up our scientists' sleeves this week! As part of Science Week, students engaged in many experiments, explorations and observations, many of which connected to Sharing the Planet. One day, our class partnered with the Kinder class to observe and recreate an oil spill with oil and water. Students used many tools to try and remove the oil from the water and from the furry creatures that live in the water. Bottom line: it was tough work, and students agreed it would be much better if oil spills just didn't happen at all!  Jack and his kinder buddy attempt to remove the oil. Grade 2 and Kinder work together to fight the oil spill! Grade 2 and Kinder Science Activity Students also got to visit the special science lab in the library one day, where they investigated physics projects, microscopes,

Grade 2- Blog #20- November 18th- 22nd LOOKING BACK For UOI this week, students learned more specific ways that people have responded to conflicts using protest. They took notes about famous sit-ins, marches, strikes and boycotts that have occurred around the world thanks to various peacemakers. Students also had a chance to respond to the conflict in the Butter Battle Book (other than "fight", which is the response that already happens in the story). They were encouraged to choose a response that would improve the quality of life, and they later explained why they chose each response that they did. Finally, students began to prepare for our summative assessment, which will double as next week's science fair project. They identified a current conflict happening somewhere in the world, and then began to brainstorm possible responses. In math last week, we took our knowledge of division (splitting up into equal groups), and applied it to fractions! We s

Grade 2- Blog #19- November 5-15th LOOKING BACK In  UOI last week, we looked through our flip-books at the many examples of conflicts, and we came up with some big categories of conflict (discrimination, not enough resources, being greedy, fighting for power, misunderstandings, and disagreeing about values). Students created skits to act out, and their classmates had to guess which type of conflict they were seeing. We also talked about equal rights, and how many conflicts occur when all people do not have equal rights! Planning a story about ignoring conflicts. Writing conflict stories. Discussing ideas for their conflict story. Students decide where to stand based on how much they agree or disagree with statements. Aika decides she is neutral about this idea/ value. This week, we finally started talking about how we can RESPOND to conflict, which is our central idea. Again, we came up with several main types of responses, including Fight, Ignore, Give
