Grade 2- Blog #26- January 20th-24th LOOKING BACK Another busy week as usual (and our first 5 day school week since 2019!). In UOI students worked hard to write out the script for our YEP performance. They also took some time to research and learn about other storytelling traditions from around the world, including Chinese shadow puppetry, Vietnamese water puppets, and storytelling type dancing from India and the Caribbean. In English, we finished up our first round of storytelling presentations. Students began working on their next, and final, fictional stories. A few students also had the chance to record their second attempt at storytelling, this time show more effort to truly look and sound like a storyteller! We also had a chance to practice being storytellers with our new buddy classroom, Pre-K B! In math, students perfected their three-digit addition strategies, and helped one another to fix any mistakes they might have made. We also began to think abo

Grade 2- Blog #25- January 14th- 17th LOOKING BACK In UOI we, narrowed down our YEP focus! We picked a story that we have read together in class, and decided to perform it like a play! Students chose which characters they wanted to act as, and sketched a storyboard style drawing of their character. They also began to write the first draft of each scene of the performance. Script writing! Brainstorming a scene together. Elsewhere in UOI, we took a deep dive into "Cinderella stories" from around the world. Students kept track of the common elements and themes in each story, while also noticing what made each version different from the others. In math, students continued to hone their three-digit addition strategies. They chose between the chip model, the break it apart strategy, the number line strategy, and making an easier problem. We practiced all kinds so that students could get a sense of which they prefer, and which might be more helpful in certain

I hope that everyone had a wonderful winter vacation! We jumped right back into the swing of things this week!  In UOI we continued our inquiry into storytelling, paying careful attention to how the methods of storytelling have changed or evolved over the years. Students learned about ancient cave drawings and hieroglyphics, two of the earliest forms of human storytelling. They then painted their own stories using the cave painting medium. We also began to seriously think about our YEP performance, brainstorming ideas, themes, mediums, etc.  In math, we began a new unit involving three-digit addition. We started learning about various strategies that we can use to add three-digit numbers, including base-10 drawings, place value charts, and the chip model. In English, we continued

Grade 2- Blog #23- December 9th- 13th LOOKING BACK In UOI, students helped to answer three questions about stories this week: what are the different story genres that exist? What are the different storytelling mediums? And what are the reasons that people tell stories? Student conducted an inquiry by rotating through the room to read, listen, watch and tell stories, all while thinking about WHY we tell stories. They came up with many different reasons! Students also have been practicing some different storytelling techniques, such as using emphasis, different tones, and projecting your voice! Investigating classic fairy tale books. Bo reads a historical fiction story. Students watch a video story that is meant to be a "call to action" to help protect elephants. Kurea, Rima and Jack use story dice to help them tell a story right on the spot! Yusuke watches a visual story that makes you feel all sorts of emotions. Shosuke, Kirato and Ka
