LOOKING BACK
Happy 2020!! I hope that everyone had a wonderful winter vacation! We jumped right back into the swing of things this week!
In UOI we continued our inquiry into storytelling, paying careful attention to how the methods of storytelling have changed or evolved over the years. Students learned about ancient cave drawings and hieroglyphics, two of the earliest forms of human storytelling. They then painted their own stories using the cave painting medium. We also began to seriously think about our YEP performance, brainstorming ideas, themes, mediums, etc.
In math, we began a new unit involving three-digit addition. We started learning about various strategies that we can use to add three-digit numbers, including base-10 drawings, place value charts, and the chip model.
In English, we continued our work with fictional small-moment stories. Students continued their previous stories, or else started new ones, focusing on details that make their stories interesting to read! They also tried harder to make sure it was a "seed" story- a small moment that takes place in one time, in one place!
VIP OF THE WEEK
We had no VIP this week, but Rima was our VIP of the week before the break!

LOOKING AHEAD
For UOI we will continue to plan the details of our YEP performance, including writing a script, assigning roles, and we will begin to think about props, costumes and sound effects! We will also examine the idea of the "Cinderella Story" across different cultures by reading different versions from around the world, and comparing them to one another.
In math we will learn several more strategies for solving three-digit addition, including the break it apart strategy, the number line strategy, and the make an easier problem strategy. Depending on how these go, we may have time to begin three-digit subtraction!
In English, students will continue their small-moment fiction stories, and they will begin to revise their writing to make it longer, stronger and more interesting!
