Unit 1: Who We Are

  Unit 1: Who We Are

Central Idea: The choices we make affect our health and wellbeing.

To start of the term we talked about our classroom rules and the things that we thought we important in the classroom. Students were challenged to work in groups and make models of the classroom rule that they thought was the most important. That had to think critically and creatively to use a variety of materials and see their masterpieces come to life!

This unit we were talking about health and wellbeing! Students learned about exercise, meditation, healthy eating, and how to get a good nights sleep. We kept journals of exercise and tracked our good sleeping habits.

Students took action is a variety of ways as well. We thought about the habits in our own lives that are healthy and unhealthy and thought of ways to change our habits. Students chose 1 Habit to add to their weekly routine and made a poster to help them remember to make a change for their health and well-being!

In math, we have been focusing on mental math strategies and improving our understanding of place value. We have been working with base 10 blocks and learning about different ways to add. Each week we are excited to show our math knowledge with a quick form math test of simple math problems. The goal of this activity is to improve our math automaticity and to help increase our confidence! We played lots of math games! Our favorite was race to 100!

In English, we have been building our reading stamina and can now read for 10 minutes with continued focus! We have been trying to find "good fit" books that are challenging for our brain but also easy enough that we can read them on our own. We have also been doing A LOT of writing! We are looking forward to having enough work built up that we can begin choose work that we are proud of to revise and edit. I am very impressed with all of the hard work that our students have shown so far and I am looking forward to continue working with them on their reading and grammar!
