Unit 6: How We Organize Ourselves

 How We Organize Ourselves

Central Idea

People Establish Systems and Organizations to meet the needs of a community

Lines of Inquiry

The purpose of systems and organizations.

How organizations work together within a community

Volunteering and community service

During this unit we came together as a classroom comunity and did a lot of preparing and practicing for YEP. Studnts were able to use the skills they learned in team work and conflict management to work with their teams to write and coreograph their own performances and then work to practice and prepare for YEP! I am very proud of all of the work that they put it!

This unit we learned about the needs of different communities and how buisnesses and organizations are built to meet those needs. We planned out our own "perfect communities" and then worked together to build one to share. Things that we included in our community: food markets, parks, stadiums, hospitals for both animals and people, police and fire stations, roads and schools. Each student thought critically about the important compontents to include in a community.

We then learned about the role of volunteers in a community and why people might choose to volunteer. We thought about the different roles of volunteers and how, even though we are young, we might try and make our community better.

In math, we finished up our unit on measurement and practiced calculating perimited and measuring using different tools. We finished off the year strong wiht reviewing all of the things that we have learned this year and making ourselves ready for third grade!

During our final week, we were able to push through different challenges and think about problems and solutions in different ways. We came together in groups and as individuals to solve problems and come up with novel solutions.

We love reading in class and this last unit was no different! We have grown a lot in our reading abilities and are much more independent in our reading now.
