LOOKING BACK
In UOI we, narrowed down our YEP focus! We picked a story that we have read together in class, and decided to perform it like a play! Students chose which characters they wanted to act as, and sketched a storyboard style drawing of their character. They also began to write the first draft of each scene of the performance.

Elsewhere in UOI, we took a deep dive into "Cinderella stories" from around the world. Students kept track of the common elements and themes in each story, while also noticing what made each version different from the others.
In math, students continued to hone their three-digit addition strategies. They chose between the chip model, the break it apart strategy, the number line strategy, and making an easier problem. We practiced all kinds so that students could get a sense of which they prefer, and which might be more helpful in certain situations!
In English, students continued to write their latest fictional stories. More students gave storytelling a try as they read their stories to the class, and received feedback on their storytelling methods. They also wrote goals for themselves on how revise or improve their story to make it stronger, longer and more interesting.

VIP OF THE WEEK
This week Jack was our VIP. He showed us tons of photos of when he was a baby, and when enjoyed many family activities. He also shared some favorite books, including Star Wars and Dr. Seuss! Finally, he showed us some important items from home, such as a stuffed rabbit, his Nintendo Switch, and an awesome Star Wars light-saber!

LOOKING AHEAD
For UOI we will continue to plan the details of our YEP performance, including finishing our script, deciding on specific sound effects to make from the story, and finalizing costume choices.
We will also begin to learn about unique storytelling methods or traditions from countries and cultures around the world.
In math students will show off all they have learned about three-digit addition, using various strategies to solve each problem. Then, we'll move on to using these same strategies.. but for three-digit subtraction!
In English, students will continue their small-moment fiction stories, and they will begin to revise their writing to make it longer, stronger and more interesting! More students will have a chance to practice their storytelling techniques by reading their completed story to the class.
