Grade 2 Publishing Party!

LOOKING BACK
Grade 5 starts to take over our classroom.
Grade 5 explorers "discover" our room!
In UOI last week, we learned about one more famous exploration: Christopher Columbus' "discovery" of America. We learned about this exploration from multiple perspectives, including the perspective of the indigenous people already living in America. We also got invaded by the Grade 5 students while we were trying to work, as they had "discovered" our classroom, and gradually began taking it over with their things and their rules. Students made connections between how they felt during this experience, and how the Native Americans may have felt during the Europeans' invasions.
Saya makes a model for her exploration project.
Kyle conducts some research about his project.
Kurea works on her exploration project.
Riko researches about oceans for her exploration project.
This week, students worked on their summative assessments for UOI. They chose an imaginary new place to discover and explore, and created a notebook that would describe their journey in detail. They made models, maps, diagrams, and letters to bring their imaginary exploration to life!

In math, students have been focusing their learning around area and perimeter. They have practiced finding the area and perimeter of shapes, including shapes drawn on grid paper. They have also practiced finding the missing lengths of some shapes by using their knowledge of the lengths that are provided.
Helping to edit others' teaching books!
For English, students worked into overdrive to get two of their teaching books ready for publishing! They used checklists to revise AND edit each of their two books, and then found a classmate to also help them revise and edit each book. On Friday, we had our second publishing party of the year, where parents and some teachers came to listen and read all of our wonderful teaching books! Students also had another chance to leave each other feedback on their work.

VIP of the Week
Last week our VIP was Aiya! She brought in some photos to share, some of her favorite books from home, and even showed us the national game from Kazakhstan. So cool!!

This week, Saya was our VIP. She also brought in a poster to teach us about her family, the book she is reading now (Harry Potter!) and some special items from home, like a giant dinosaur toy!

LOOKING AHEAD
September's Merit Winner for Grade 2 (5 students tied!)
Next week in UOI, we will start a new unit: Sharing the Planet! We will start by thinking about "quality of life", and sort pictures that show a good quality of life versus a bad quality of life. Then we will start thinking about the word "peace"- what does it mean to us? What symbols do we know that represent peace?
Getting books ready for publishing party!
For math, we will also begin a new unit: Pattern and Function. In this unit, we will investigate odd and even numbers, skip counting patterns, arrays, and likelihood and probability! We may also dig into fraction if we have time at the end of the unit!

In English, we will once again start a new unit! This time, we will be learning to write persuasively, via opinion letters. We will use similar strategies to plan out our writing, including our reasons, evidence, and persuasive language.
