Welcome to grade 2 in the virtual world!

Hello and welcome to the first week of grade 2 at AIS.I'm from Australia and I joined AIS in 2019 in Pre K. I've worked in Australia and Nagano, Japan for 7 years now. I've enjoyed getting to know your child this week through the online lessons and I hope it will run smoothly from now on.

Our first UOI unit is:
Transdisciplinary Theme: Who we are
Central idea is "The choices we make affect our health and wellbeing."

This week we started learning about the different elements that contribute to our physical health. For example, our diet, exercise routine, sleep, screen time (TV, online games, computer use) and personal hygiene. As many of us are staying inside for many hours a day this unit is very relevant to our lives right now!

Some children have been running up and down the stairs to get exercise or doing jump rope, Just Dance videos, yoga and general stretches/exercises. The children were introduced to the health food pyramid and learnt that we should all be eating 5-7 serves of vegetables and fruit a day!

Every weekday, I've asked the students to record what they eat every meal, including snacks, and count how many minute of exercise and screen time they had. I would also like them to write down what time they went to bed (approximately) and what time they woke up.

The reason for this is I would like them to look at their diet and other behaviours and see if there are any changes they could make to be healthier. As the Learner Profiles for this unit are balanced and reflective, I feel that keeping this diary and thinking about what they could change relates to these profiles perfectly.

In math, I've been doing revision of things they should know already, such as 2 digit addition and subtraction, place value, repeat addition (which leads to multiplication) and word problems.

In English, the focus is to speak using correct use of past, present and future tense. For that reason we have been doing a lot of practise with regular and irregular verbs!

For this weekend, I asked the children to do the Mathletics tasks that are due next Friday and read some of the books on RAZ that I assigned to them. Have a great weekend and see you at 9am on Monday!
