Week 16 and 17

Term 3- Week 16 and 17- 2nd Grade Blog

LOOKING BACK:

UOI
*When we got back from Winter Break, we immediately opened up our town, and began developing our systems and organizations! For the past two weeks, we've established a power system, a cell tower, a water treatment plant, and much more. We've overcome a fire, a contaminated river, homelessness, and a dishonest mayor. We also responded to a growing community by creating more jobs and services.

Math
*Last week we learned how to create an easier problem to work with in our heads. This made our addition and subtraction much easier to do! This week, we finally learned how to use the vertical form to add three-digit numbers. However, we also learned how to use a place value chart alongside. This has helped us to truly understand how and why the shortcut method works!

English
*We learned about several different poetic structures last week, including story poems, mask poems and Haiku. This week, we tried out different forms, and also began using a checklist to edit and revise our poetry. We created goals for ourselves to work on next week!

LOOKING AHEAD:
UOI
*Next week will be our last week with Happy Life Town. We'll visit Book Town, and compare how their systems and organizations compare to ours. We'll discuss volunteering in a bit more detail. Finally, we'll prepare for our Town Hall Meeting, during which each student will share a summary of their role in the town (our summative assessment).

Math
*Next week we will learn how to use the vertical form and a place value chart- but this time with three-digit subtraction! We'll start with manipulatives, then draw place value discs, & finally try it with "chips" for the most efficient method.

English
*We'll wrap up our poetry unit by choosing our favorite poems to edit, revise and rewrite, so that we can make them as strong as can be, before we publish them! We'll give each other feedback as well, and then we'll share our poetry with others during a publishing party!
