Focused readers! |
The first week of second grade is complete! Students did an amazing job transitioning back into "school mode". It was nice to see how excited they were to begin a new school year! This week we spent a lot of time establishing our classroom expectations and agreements. We created reading expectations and practiced focused reading. We also created writing time expectations, and began to write our first "small-moment" stories to share about a favorite memory from spring vacation. In math, we practiced how to solve math word problems using the "RDW" process- first read the problem, then draw a picture, then write a number sentence, and finally write a word sentence.

During UOI time we participated in a gallery walk, where we studied photographs about healthy and unhealthy choices. We spent time sorting these photos, discussing what they meant, and we finished the week by jotting down questions we still had about them.

LOOKING AHEAD
Next week we will learn how to make our small-moment stories more detailed, and more specific! In math, we will continue to build up our number sense with three-digit numbers. During UOI time, we will begin to study how our eating habits affect our health! We'll research what it means to have a balanced diet, and we'll make our own food pyramids!
