Grade 2- Blog #22- December 2nd- 6th

LOOKING BACK
We finally had our Term 2 field trip this week! Since we are between units this week, this field trip was a nice opportunity to address both our previous unit (Sharing the Planet) and our next unit (How We Express Ourselves). To that end, we visited both the Osaka International Peace Center, as well as the NHK Broadcasting Center. We learned how war and violence impacted the quality of life for many people in Osaka during World War 2, and then we got to see how stories are told from NHK television sets and news casting stations! Of course, we also enjoyed spending some time together in Osaka Castle Park- eating, writing, playing and talking!

Elsewhere in UOI, we started our next unit about storytelling. Students participated in a gallery walk, where they observed many photographs and illustrations of various storytelling methods, and added their thoughts, feelings and questions to each gallery item. They also brainstormed as many words as they could that connected with stories and storytelling, and we turned these into "word clouds". Finally, students spent some time watching professional storytellers, so they could generate a list of things that excellent storytellers do!

In English, we also began a new writing unit about stories. We brainstormed the elements of a fiction story, and reminded ourselves about the difference between a watermelon story and a seed story. Finally, we read and listened to some examples of small-moment fiction stories.

In math, practiced predicting the likelihood of events, such as pulling a colored ball out of a bag at random. Then, we transferred our knowledge of fractions to help us figure out specific probabilities of each color being picked. Finally, we learned that we can also express probability in percent form!

                                                                VIP OF THE WEEK
We took a break from VIP this week since it was so busy!! Next week, Jaimica will be VIP of the Week, followed by Rima the week after!

LOOKING AHEAD
Jack, Kurea and Aika gave a speech and held signs for an anti-bullying campaign at the whole-school assembly!

Rima and Saya gave a speech about ending discrimination at the whole-school assembly!
In UOI, we will investigate WHY people tell stories. We will listen, watch, read and perform different types of stories in an effort to understand the many reasons that people tell stories. We will also continue to practice our own storytelling skills, such as enunciation and putting stress on certain words.

In math, we will make some games and projects that involve probability and chance, using fractions and percents to support our connections with likelihood of events.

In English, we will begin writing our own gripping fictional stories- while also continuing to read and listen to mentor texts that provide great examples of fictional stories- whether realistic fiction or not!
