Grade 2- Week 6- May 13th-17th, 2019

LOOKING BACK

Sorting words into good and poor mental health choices.
We got to learn all about mental health this week! Students learned all about the ways that mental and physical health are connected, and discussed how our brains send messages to our bodies. They learned what well-being means (being healthy, happy and comfortable!), and talked about some of the ways that you can find well-being for yourself. Finally, they explored some important emotions in greater detail, such as worry, anger, and happiness.
Deciding how to sort the mental health vocabulary words.
The group begins sorting their words into categories.
Discussing with the group about how to sort the words!

In writing, students continued their small-moment stories, and focused especially on creating stronger endings. They also chose one story to be their published story. They began to edit and revise their story using a checklist!

In math, students practiced adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. They began with written strategies, such as the "Break it Apart" strategy, then moved on to solving the problems in their heads when they felt ready.

Kaname and Bo use the break it apart strategy to add and subtract 2-digit numbers.
Ichika show her mental math strategies.
Rima shows how to use the break-it apart strategy.
Kyle finishes up the subtraction break-it apart problem.
Jack subtract the ones!
Haruhito breaks apart the smaller number.
LOOKING AHEAD
Next week we will wrap up all of our current units! For UOI, students will spend the week working on their summative assessments, which will take the form of a Health Action Plan. They will create different goals for themselves, and include specific actions and plans to reach those goals.
In writing students will take the final steps to get their story ready for our publishing party!
In math, students will learn some final strategies to add and subtract numbers in their heads.

The class tries out Bo and Haruhito's physical fitness board game.
