Grade 2- Week 10- June 17th -June , 21st 2019

LOOKING BACK
Happy Numeracy Week! Students got to enjoy math in a variety of ways this week, including participating in a math game show, creating math tessellation art, and answering daily questions about tricky math. I hope that everyone had a chance to discover what they love about numbers!

In UOI, students began learning about simple machines. They learned all about ramps and levers through books, videos and their own real-life examples. They even created a small lever (see-saw) at their desks. Then, they learned about a third simple machine: the wheel and axle. Students worked in partners to create a vehicle that could move using at least one wheel and axle. They tested out their creations on a ramp, and reflected on what worked well and what did not. The next day, they revised their vehicles to create stronger wheels and axles, and the results were much more successful!

In writing, students continued to practice the scientific method by writing about their experiments. They made sure to include a conclusion, where they could reflect on their hypothesis, explain WHY they think it happened, and also pose a new question or idea based on the results.

In math, students finished up their work with line graphs by asking each other questions about their data/ graphs. Then, we learned about yet another type of graph: line plots! Students practiced making one together, then made their own about birds. They also had a chance to learn a new game involving dice and probability.

LOOKING AHEAD
Next week in UOI students will investigate the remaining simple machines (pulley, wedge and screw) as they read, watch, and explore each of these objects. They will continue to make connections between each simple machine, and start preparing for their final projects!

In math, students will conduct another survey to collect data and display it via a line plot.

In writing, students will continue to create their own experiments to conduct and record, making sure to follow the scientific method carefully.
