Grade 2- Week 9- June 10th-June 14th, 2019

LOOKING BACK
It was so nice having so many parents visit our classroom this week for Parents' Morning! Students and parents had a chance to explore magnets together- and ask great questions about how magnets can create force!

In UOI, students learned about Newton's Three Laws of Motion. They took notes and provided their own examples of each physical law. Students also investigated two more types of force: magnetic force and buoyant force (the upward push on objects in water). They conducted experiments to find out more about the properties of magnetism, and they made predictions about what would sink or float based on that object's density!
Aiya testing out her objects.
Jack's hypothesis was correct!
Aika tests the density of the foam and the marble.
In writing, students continued to practice the scientific method by writing about their experiments. This week students paid special attention to their procedure and their results. They looked at one another's lab reports to check if there was enough details included.

Students decide how to organize their forces and motion teaching pages.
Yuto and Shosuke test our their catapult for their gravity experiment.
Kurea and Rima work on their boat experiment during UOI/ writing time.
In math, students finished up their bar graphs from last week. Then, we looked at some examples of line graphs together. We used the information from the graph to answer all sorts of questions about the data. Finally, students brainstormed questions to create their own line graph.
Yusuke collects more data for his bar graph.
Kanna and Kaname work on their bar graphs.
LOOKING AHEAD
Next week in UOI students will begin to investigate our final line of inquiry: simple machines. They will learn what each of the 6 simple machines are, as they pose questions, make connections, and come up with real world examples of each machine.

In math, students will  make their own line graph, before moving on to another type of graph: scatter plots.

In writing, students will continue to create their own experiments to conduct and record, making sure to follow the scientific method carefully. We will focus more on conclusions next week.
Shosuke plays "Launch Ball", a super fun computer game with a forces and motion theme!
Saya and Aika create a catapult for their latest experiment.
