LOOKING BACK
In UOI, students have been working twice as hard!! That's because we are still preparing for our YEP performance (lots to do for that still!), AND we have begun our sixth and final UOI unit- How We Organize Ourselves.
For YEP, students have begun acting out their scenes, memorizing their lines, researching their sound effects, drawing their background images, and making their props! We were so happy when we edited the script and finally got it down to under 8 minutes!
Meanwhile, in our new UOI unit, students have been planning a simulated community in our classroom! They will be role-playing the citizens as they learn to navigate the various organizations and systems that people establish in a community. We have already done a lot of work to prepare- students went on a walk through our local neighborhood to get ideas, brainstormed various parts of a community, sorted them into different categories, and thought about what would be the most important features to meet the needs of our community. We also created a town our map, as well as ID cards to help remember important information about ourselves, our families, our jobs and our employees. We are hoping to officially "open" our town sometime time next week!

In English, we finished up our final round of storytelling. All students had a chance to try and improve on their first try, and incorporate the feedback they received from their classmates on how to be a better storyteller.
This week, we also began our final reading/ writing unit: Poetry! We learned what it means to put on your "poet's eyes" and see the world in a different way. We also got to read through several mentor poems together and get a sense of how poets write about different topics- and how they create a mood for each poem!
Also, congratulations to Jack for winning the student council election-- he will be the grade level representative next year in Grade 3! Thank you to ALL students who ran for being risk-takers!

In math, students perfected their three-digit subtraction strategies. We learned how to make an easier problem with certain subtraction problems, and we also practiced more number line, break it apart, and chip model strategies. Students summarized all of this knowledge into a teaching project, where they could teach someone else about all of the choices they have when it comes to adding or subtracting three-digit numbers.
VIP OF THE WEEK
Last week Yusuke was our VIP of the Week. He told us all about his favorite sport and activity: baseball! He even shared an awesome Hiroshima Carps hat that he got at a baseball game before. Yusuke also shared some favorite books from home with the class, including a math dictionary!
This week, Kyle began as VIP, but he'll continue next week when he brings in some special items to share from home!

LOOKING AHEAD
YEP practice will continue, with students working hard to get all of the work done in all areas (sounds, backgrounds, acting, etc)
In UOI, students will add the finishing touches to their businesses and services so that we can open the town next week!

For English, we'll continue to research poetry, while brainstorming topics and giving it a try on our own!
In math, we will begin to focus on telling time, including analog and digit clocks, as well as calculating elapsed time. This knowledge of time should help us out with navigating our community time as well!
