Unit 5: How We Express Ourselves

In this unit we learned a lot about storytelling! We practiced being good oral story tellers and practiced how our voice and body can move as we are telling a story. We used our bodies to tell stories and practiced telling stories without our voices, such as using pictures, miming, and shadow puppets.

Our favorite thing to learn about was how different cultures have told stories throughout history. We learned about shadow puppets, storytelling though dance, and the oral tradition of storytelling. Students worked really hard on writing their own stories and thinking about ways to express those stories in different ways. We also began practicing those stories for YEP!

This unit was cut in half by winter break! We had such a fun time with spirit week leading up to winter holiday. My personal favorite was our class theme where we dressed as crayons. We made hats for our specialist teachers and brought our whole learning community together!

In math this unit, we worked on many different strategies to add and subtract. We focused a lot on doubles and getting out math fluency high! We did fast math facts EVERY DAY! With one minute at the beginning of class we raced to see how many problems we could solve! Most of us were able to level up all though addition and subtraction and some even moved on to multiplication problems. We started learning about different multiplication strategies this unit and will go deeper into that topic in the next unit.
